Ashes & Snow

Superbowl Sunday morning started with our usual trip to the Farmer’s Market where we picked up some fresh fruit, eggs, juice and veggies. Michael, Linda and Georgia joined us for brunch. Little Georgia is absolutely beautiful. After brunch, Oliver and The Dads’ went to Santa Monica to visit the Gregory Colbert Ashes & Snow Nomadic Museum that Aunt Lisa has been chatting about for the past few weeks.

The Ashes and Snow Exhibit is amazing! The exhibit is a collection of photographic prints, film and installation. The works are a collection of animals and children from India, Egypt, Kenya, Tonga, Sri Lanka, and others. Think surreal images of elephants and children, and films that show them swimming together with ethereal music playing throughout the dimly lit structure. It’s really incredible. The nomad museum itself is an architectural feat. The building is constructed with shipping containers that you walk under and around. The museum is set up in the parking lot adjacent to the beach and the pier. We were not sure if Oliver was old enough to enjoy the exhibit, but as it turned out, he loved it. He really enjoyed the prints with the animals. He liked the prints better than the film installations. Whenever we would walk by a print with an orangutan Oliver would make the international monkey sound: “ooh ooh ooh!” The crowds of people were very patient with Oliver because during the film installations he would talk loudly in his “baby language” and occasionally laugh and scream at the site of the elephants. After about ten minutes into a film, Oliver would Inevitably wiggle off of my hip to the floor where he would play with the wheels on his stroller while the Dads’ kept watching the film.

After the exhibit, we walked over to the Lobster for some dinner a sunset and then a drive home where we took a bath and fell asleep. OK, so Superbowl Sunday had NOTHING to do with football. Seriously, what did you expect?
