Today the Dads’ let Supernanny spend the day with The Kid while we went out on a breakfast date. After breakfast and spa appointments, we needed to hit the grocery store and cook a small turkey for just us. We decided that this year we would hunker down at the house; stay in our PJ’s and watch movies all weekend long.
Every year we generally have all of those without family over to spend the meal with us. Some years this has meant moving a meal for eight to a meal for 23 with only a moments notice. It’s hard to believe that just two years ago, Oliver’s Nursery was a make shift dining room for our Thanksgiving friends & family. Traditionally that kind of Turkey Stress is exactly what made the holiday fun. This year that is definitely not the case. Oliver’s first Thanksgiving is going to be a memorable one cause it’s just the Dad’s and Grandma Angela. Everyone we know has someplace to be this year. Maybe that is a bit indicative of the way our friends have flown the coup (no turkey pun intended) since the baby was born.
Tonight Papi started preparing for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving meal by baking (and eating) two pies: One Apple, and One Pumpkin. Papi had to bake the pies this year because Nicholas at LaBrea Bakery annoyed us to no end. We called on our way over to ask if they had any of their delicious pumpkin pies left and he said they did but that he was not going to hold any orders for me. After fighting traffic on LaBrea, we arrived only to find that he sold the last one. Happy Thanksgiving Nicholas at LaBrea Bakery—“thanks” for nothing! As good as the bakery’s pumpkin pie is, and as much as it was (note the past tense) a staple at our house on Thanksgiving, it won’t be any longer. I ultimately won out because Papi’s pies are way better. It did not take us long to dive into the apple pie. Maybe Papi can bake an extra one to throw at Nicholas. Since this is Oliver's first Thanksgiving, perhaps it's time for a new Thankgiving ritual.
Here are some pictures!
