The Cold (Night 3)

Tonight was not as good as last night. Oliver is still as juicy as ever and what little fever he developed (99) went away after a drop of Tylenol around 6pm. We went for a walk around the neighborhood and played for a bit with his toys. Oliver seemed to have some energy so we kept him up until around 8:30 (instead of his usual 8pm bedtime). We figured keeping him up a bit later would help him to sleep longer, right? Nope.

Instead Oli cried, no wait, screamed when we cleaned out his snotty nose. The nose clearing allowed Oliver to breath. Our proof of that was the fact that his screams were that much louder, and the crying jag went on for about two hours. Sometimes it calmed down to a short wail, maybe a pained moaning, but it would always revert back to a full on cry. Tears and all.

Papi took the first calming session. After forty-five minutes or so he passed The Kid on to me. I rocked him; talked to him; let him play in the vibrating chair; whatever soothed him. When I put him in his crib he proceeded to cry for another half hour. I just sat next to him, watching him cry through the slats of his crib and trying not to make eye contact. I could see that he was still sitting up and the tears were real. The whole time thinking to myself “Ugh, I AM that parent on Supernanny!” It was at that moment that I realized this kid is 7 months, and sick. Not a two-year-old brat with an attitude problem (not yet anyway). I needed to do whatever it takes to make him comfortable, right? I took him back into the bedroom with Papi.

So there we are. The three of us comfortable and lying in bed watching the Tivo’d premiere of Grey’s Anatomy. About 20 minutes into the show Oliver began talking over the television. “LA LA BLAH [snort] WAH GABUZUH [snort] WHATEVAH BLAH” The babbling just kept on going. It was peppered with the occasional snort of congestion. We paused the Tivo and just listened for a while. He was literally talking himself to sleep. It was after 10pm and he was not going to let us put him back in that crib so we thought we should just sleep together.
